It’s just a little over a month before the worlds best endurance mountain bikers grace the slopes of the Nevis Range in Fort William in a return of the WEMBO World Solo Championships to (one of) its birthplace. And we’re excited for some great caffeine fuelled racing.
Riders will be venturing from far and wide for the 7th edition of the WEMBO sanctioned race, including the 2017 Elite World Champions, Cory Wallace (Canada) and Gaia Ravaiolio (Italy) who will have hot competition from both home and away. Big names such as Jason English, Kate Penglase, Matti Tahkola, Naomi Freireich, Taylor Lideen, Carwyn Davis, Kaitlyn Boyle and Elena Novikova plus countless others will all be looking for a shot at the elite jerseys in October.
The single speed and age categories will also be hard fought, with numerous jerseys coming home to the UK from Italy in 2017 and plenty of riders will be looking to take one home from the Highlands.
Frazer Coupland, part of the No Fuss had this to say: “We are all getting pretty excited about WEMBO 2018, there has been a fair bit of trail development at Nevis Range recently, we plan to introduce some of the new gold, as well as some of the classic highland trails that distinguishes the area as the Outdoor Capital of the UK an inspirational destination for mountain biking no matter what the weather presents.”
With entry list that looks like the 24hr racers role of fame it is certainly going to be a superb weekend of racing”
Course details have yet to be released in their entirety, but racers can expect an a tough time with over 400m of ascent per lap and some classic highland rocky, rooty singletrack along with entirely new sections to keep them on their toes. And if that wasnt enough, the potential for hardcore weather given the time of the year could result in the brewing of a perfect racing storm.
